Updated: World War 2 re-enactment in New Carlisle now with video
The third annual Salute to Veterans returned to Michiana the weekend of July 15 & 16, 2017. The first year they were at Elkhart Municipal Airport, in 2016 they were in Bristol (see photos here) and in 2017 they were at Sodbusters in New Carlisle. These events are more than just entertainment, they are also educational. The re-enactors camp out during the event at the venue and they live as close to how the soldiers did during World War II as possible. And these are not merely American trips. There are also re-enactors who portray the Germans, Russians, British, and Scottish troops. There are also those who participate as civilians and medical personnel. And in many cases, it’s a family affair with fathers and sons, brothers, and whole families who are involved. And almost all of them are willing to talk with visitors about their role, etc.
The vehicles used are from the era, the weapons are too and so are the uniforms. Everyone who is in the these events spends hours and thousands of dollars to make sure everything is authentic, right down to the boots they wear. If you never been to one of these, I encourage it. These re-enactments are all over the country. One of the most popular events happens in Rockford, IL.
In the event in New Carlisle, there was also an actual World War 2 veteran participating.
Below are the photos from the 2017 event.
